MycoLiving: The Shroom Edit

Nature-inspired innovation: Furniture that is not built, but rather grown.

The conventional furniture industry faces an environmental crisis, contributing a staggering 5% of landfill waste, dominated by non-recyclable polyurethane foam and leather. MycoLiving is a revolutionary departure from traditional furniture manufacturing. Our foray with Mycelium-based materials began in 2020, committed to nature-inspired innovation that addresses both current and future societal challenges. Our experimentation began with the idea of hybridizing everyday objects by the introduction of mycelium parts to its conventional counterparts.

Globally, there have been several advancements with mycelium being grown to form lights, furniture, and installations. MycoLiving is a refined approach to incorporating Mycelium in everyday life, for wider acceptance by users and its inclusion into the market as a mainstream material.

MycoLiving leverages mycelium-based foams and leather to craft furniture that is recyclable and compostable. Our design incorporates a sturdy mild steel framework, complemented by mycelium foam and leather in a dry assembly. When it’s time for a change, the furniture easily disassembles: the metal components can be repurposed or recycled, while the mycelium parts return to the earth through composting.

Inspired by the intricate growth patterns of mycelium, our furniture design mirrors the branching network of hyphae, prioritizing four key parameters: appeal, functionality, durability, and product lifecycle.
