An expression of light in mycelium and seaweed.
Designed as a small object with a larger material ambition, the lamp is available in two versions. Root is made from mycelium textile, grown from the underground network of fungi while Reef is made from a seaweed based biopolymer, translucent and green, with a surface that holds the memory of water and marine growth.
Both versions share the same form: a split cylindrical shade held around a central light. The form is a dialogue between material and light. Theopening between the two halves is allows light to escape through whilethe material is illuminated in a soft glow.A brushed stainless steel spine holds the light source, while the shade panels are fixed around it. The lamp is a small architectural assembly with its construction made visible through the vertical slit.
Root & Reef sits on a table, yet speaks of larger ecological systems: soil, ocean, growth, waste, repair, and return, challenging the idea that objects must end in landfill.
This continues Anomalia’s quest in making bio-based hybrids for the built environment.
