Integrating Mycelium into Architectural Components.

The construction industry significantly impacts the environment, contributing to pollution, resource depletion, and climate change. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches to materials and design. Biophilic design, which seeks to connect building occupants more closely to nature, offers a promising framework for creating healthier, more sustainable built environments. Mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi, is a revolutionary material in this context, offering properties such as biodegradability, thermal insulation, lightweight strength, and sound absorption.

Students explore the potential of mycelium in designing building components that address pressing environmental issues caused by traditional architecture and construction practices. The goal is to design a functional architectural component that is either partially or wholly made of mycelium, utilizing its unique properties and ecological benefits.
